Chicago Happiness

ASKED the professors who teach the meaning of life to tell me what is happiness. And I went to famous executives who boss the work of thousands of men. They all shook their heads and gave me a smile as though I was trying to fool with them. And then one Sunday afternoon I wandered out along the Desplaines river And I saw a crowd of Hungarians under the trees with their women and children and a keg of beer and an accordion. **Carl Sandburg's "Happiness" published in 1916

The Red Lion - It's Haunted!

Brian took us to the Red Lion Pub for lunch. This English pub is located on the north side of Chicago.

The building in which the Red Lion is located was built in 1882 and while former owners may have been aware of the ghosts... they weren't talking. Since John Cordwell took over the pub and started renovating it several years ago, the place has become known as one of the most haunted restaurants in Chicago!

John claims that the pub is haunted by ghosts, including his father. He even brought us a photo of his father and a corresponding photo of the apparent ghost. There's no doubt the photo had some cloudy figure in it...

There is also a rumored story of a spirit of a young retarded girl who died in the building. Other ghosts include a strong presence in the upstairs women's restroom, a man in cowboy clothing, a man who sometimes walks up the stairs the through the downstairs bar, a blond-haired man and a bearded man wearing a black hat.

We personally enjoyed the bar because it was not at all crowded, and it was very laid-back. They also show full-length movies and television documentaries on the TV behind the bar. We enjoyed the Three Stooges and the conversation with the bar owner.
